Keyword Services
I've
found an excellent shortcut for getting huge lists of
valuable keywords.
It's
a membership site called Top Keyword Lists run by a
mentor of mine, Keith Baxter, who is a real life internet
"guru" (although he'll probably kill me for
calling him that;).
Each
week you get 25 lists of keywords to plug straight in
to whatever site builder you're using which saves hours
and hours of keyword research!

Finding
Keywords Tips - Step 1
First
of all do some basic research to find the right general
keywords. There is an excellent research tool for finding
keywords called Good
Keywords. It's free, so click on the link and go
grab a copy for yourself now.
This
will allow you to type in a keyword and find out how
often it is searched for on Overture each month. Double
the figure for a rough estimate of how often the same
keyword is searched for on Google.
It
will also give you a list of other related keywords
that contain the same phrase and how often each phrase
is searched for.
If
we use "Keyword" as an example we find that
this is searched for roughly 115,000 times a month.
It also shows us that the second highest search is "enter
keyword or web address here" (73,000) and the third
is Keyword Tip (35,000), etc.
Note
that it does not show plurals seperatley, nor does it
show miss spelt words.
The
goodkeywords tool is just the first stage that you should
use to make sure people are searching for what you web
site will be about.
Take
some time and brainstorm a selection of similar keywords
and make a list. Ideally you want a primary and secondary
set of key phrases to start with to concentrate on for
the home page of your web site.
The
main problem with GoodKeywords is that it is not accurate
as to what people are actually typing in to the search
box. In order to get the exact phrase that people are
searching on we need to use another tool, called WordTracker.
Unfortunatly this one does cost, but it is probably
the most important tool in a clever
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) strategy, ask any
sucessful webmaster.
WordTracker
will allow you to type in a Keyword Phrase or Term
and will again give you a long list of suggestions,
but these are the exact keyword phrases that people
are usiong to search on.
It
will then allow you to select as many related key phrases
and analyse them in more detail to see how many web
sites there are competing for each term. This is extremely
useful information to decide which key phrases you want
to target with your website.
